interim 2004 i traveled to greece and rome with the rest of my class studying "historical geography and the bible," led by professor jimmy hanson

as we traced the travels of the apostle paul and the early christian church, we studied his epistles and the book of acts, as well as explored the historical context of the hellenized world that paul lived and traveled in.  we began our studies in athens, seeing sights such as the acropolis, ancient agora, zeus's temple, the old and new olympic stadiums, and the island of aegina.  we also traveled to the ruins of corinth and studied the book of corinthians, epidavros the site of the best preserved ancient theater of the ancient world, to delphi in the mountains where people from near and far traveled to consult the oracle in ancient times, to the hanging monastaries of meteora, to the city of thessenoliki and studied the book of thesselonians, to the ruins of phillipi where paul was kept a prisoner, to vergina where philip ii is buried, and on to rome and the coluseum, catacombs, many many churches, and the vatican.  what an unforgettable trip

delphi: the naval of the universe

delphi was once considered the "naval" or center of the universe, as ancient people came from all over the mediterranean to seek the advice of the most important oracle in greece.  the pythian games were help at this location up in the mountains every four years.  here me and the other ladies show our navals next to the physical representation of the delphic naval...so clever

thessaloniki

our fearless leader, the illustrious pj

easily a top three favorite teacher of all time, professor jimmy kept us interested in the subject matter, laughing at his jokes, and singing along to his continuous stream of musical numbers

on the jon in phillipi

it may look like bryan, nicholas, mike and i are just sitting on a bench reading, but in fact, we're sitting on holes that onced served as public (very public...social even) bathroom facilities, with rushing water flowing under to serve as plumbing, in the ancient city of phillipi.  i don't know about you, but i'd prefer my legs didn't touch someone elses when i use the ol' wc...

the vatican

buddy checks!! nicholas was my partner for the trip, and we had our own secret sign and each other's back.  here we are on top of st. peter's in the vatican after attending mass and seeing the late pope john paul II.  we also were able to take a day long tour and see the priceless treasures it holds
